Cardinal
Investigates how a body-centric technology might enhance our sense of directional awareness and connectedness
Cardinal was developed as part of a larger exploration of extensions of self.
Cardinal focuses on ways that we can gain an extra sense by feeling the warmth of a place dear to us. Once the wearer decides on a location the pattern on the garment warms up in the direction of that location. Thermochromic ink is used to display this to others. The pattern will gradually change as the wearer spends more or less time in a particular position.
These gradual, soft, transitions are less an indicator and more of feature that has to be noticed over time and inquired about. Perhaps prompting a discussion about the set location.
Prosthetic Technologies of Being is a Social Body Lab project that was produced in collaboration with Intel Research.
