⊕ Expand ImageMonarch is actuated by tensing a muscle sensed by an EMG sensor.MONARCH is a collaboration between the Social Body Lab at OCAD University and Intel Research. This project explores ways in which technologies can feel like an extension of self. Through the development of a series of three prototypes we have explored how technology can extend our ability to sense our surroundings and express our emotions in a visceral way.

Controlled through the body’s movement Monarch aims to allow users to extend their movements and expand the body’s ability to express. Monarch is a set of body mounted, muscle controlled expandable textiles. With a small tense of their muscle users gain the ability to set off an extravagant, often humorous, display of colourful, sculptured textiles on either shoulder.
